There are three locks. They protect different things, so it helps to know which is which.
The access code
Each reader has a 6-character access code. A child can type it under I have an access code on the sign-in page (Quick sign-in) to jump straight to their own profile on a family device.
The reader PIN
A 4-digit PIN belongs to one reader. It is needed to leave that child’s profile, and to let a grown-up pay from a child’s profile. It is stored scrambled, never as the digits, and five wrong guesses lock it for five minutes.
The grown-up question
A short multiplication question shown before something only a grown-up should do — changing Kid Mode, for example, or paying for narration from a child’s profile when there is no PIN.
What a child cannot open
Some pages are closed in a child’s profile, including Community, Leaderboard, Pricing, Wallet & Coins and Gift. A child who reaches one sees “This page is for grown-ups only” and is sent back to their stories after a few seconds. There is also an Ask a Grown-up to Unlock button.

The PIN is locked after wrong tries
After 5 wrong guesses the PIN is locked for 5 minutes. Wait, then try again. Guessing again during the lock only makes you wait longer.
You forgot the PIN
As the parent, you can reset it. Choose the forgot-PIN option and enter your account password to prove it is you, then set a new PIN.
Reset your password if you need toThe access code does not sign the child in
An access code chooses a profile; it does not sign anyone in. It works on a device that is already signed in to the family account. On a new device, sign in as the parent first.
